District Health Services and Wellness

Rio Rancho Public Schools has more than 17,000 students at 21 schools, each staffed with a Nurse and/or other healthcare staff to assist students with their healthcare needs. The School Nurse is able to administer medications to students, assess students with health concerns, and manage minor illnesses and injuries. Our school nurses and associated staff play a vital role in the education, health, and safety of our students.

Below please find information about required school immunizations and the medical forms necessary for your child to receive medication or specialized medical treatment from the school health office.

Immunizations

All NM students are required to meet the immunizations requirements of the New Mexico Department of Health. Below you'll find important immunization links and information:

If you choose to exempt your child from vaccinations, the State requires an exemption form be completed for each child. After completion it must be notarized and sent to Santa Fe for consideration. If you file an exemption, you MUST also bring the school nurse a copy of the notarized form.

Medical Forms

If your child requires any medications at school (asthma inhaler, EpiPen, or daily prescription), the school needs an order from the prescribing pediatrician/physician.

Students with healthcare needs that may affect their school attendance and/or performance have Individualized Health Plans (IHP), which are separated from the Individualized Education Program (IEP) plan but attached to the IEP or 504 plan based on a student’s needs.

Severe Allergy

If your child has a known allergic reaction to anything that requires an EpiPen, you must have the medication available for your child to receive at school. Please print the Allergy Medication Authorization form and take to your Pediatrician to have them completed. Return the completed form to your child's school nurse. Note: All Epi-Pens brought to the health office must have a pharmacy label for your child. Benadryl brought must be unopened & in its original packaging.

Asthma

If your child has Asthma and requires an inhaler or nebulizer at school, you must have the medication available for your child to receive at school. Please print this form out and take it to your Pediatrician. Note: All inhalers brought to the health office must have a pharmacy label for your child. Please provide a spacer and mask if your child requires one.

Seizures

If your child has Seizures, they require emergency medication at school. You must have the medication available for your child to receive at school. Please print the Action Plan for Seizures form and take to your Pediatrician to have them complete. Return the completed form to your child's school nurse. Note: All medication brought to the health office must have a pharmacy label for your child.

Prescription Medication

If your child requires over-the-counter medication, please print the Authorization to Administer Prescription Medication form and return the completed form to your child's school nurse. Note: Any medicine brought must be un-opened & in the original packaging.

Over the Counter Medication

If your child takes a prescribed medication daily that is needed at school, please print the Non-Asthma Medication form and take to your Pediatrician to have them complete. Return the completed form to your child's school nurse. Note: All prescriptions brought to the health office must have a pharmacy label for your child.
