Colinas del Norte Elementary Wins Dav Pilkey "'Be a Reading Superhero' Educator Contest"
Hundreds of students at Colinas del Norte Elementary have their very own book to keep and enjoy, thanks to bestselling children’s book author Dav Pilkey (Captain Underpants and the new Dog Man series) and the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge.
Colinas del Norte Elementary School was selected by Scholastic as the winning school in New Mexico for the first-ever Dav Pilkey ‘Be a Reading Superhero’ Educator Contest. Just before the end of school, teachers surprised students at the school's talent show with the news. Reading specialists then brought wagon loads of books to each classroom and students were able to select on to keep for their very own.
The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a free reading program that helps kids take a “summer leap” into books and keep kids reading all summer. Parents and educators can learn more about the challenge and sign-up kids to participate at www.scholastic.com/summer.
As the 2016 Scholastic Summer Reading Global Ambassador, Dav Pilkey joined Scholastic in launching the national contest to ensure all kids have access to great books this summer. Applicants were asked to fill out an online application posing the question: “Please tell us what you are doing to help get your students reading this summer?” One school in each U.S. state, territory and in the District of Columbia was selected to win an array of popular, age-appropriate Scholastic titles. Fourth-grade teacher Ashley Randall applied on behalf of Colinas del Norte. The full list of winners is available here.
Colinas del Norte enrolls 720 students in the North Hills and Northern Meadows neighborhoods of Rio Rancho. Many of its students have only limited access to books of their own, and the award will put books into the hands of children who might not otherwise have books in their homes.
“When it comes to kids and reading, there’s no such thing as a guilty pleasure,” said Dav Pilkey, international bestselling author and creator of the phenomenally popular Captain Underpants series. “Even though I struggled with reading growing up because of my dyslexia, I was fortunate to have parents who encouraged me to choose the books I wanted to read: silly books with tons of illustrations that made me laugh out loud. And if it weren’t for these books that motivated me to keep turning the page, I wouldn’t be the writer I am today. Summer is a great time to discover the fun and joy of reading and I am honored to be the global ambassador of the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge campaign.”
