RRPS staff members with table piled with foodA lot of Rio Rancho families will have a happier holiday season, thanks to generous, record-setting donations from staff members at Rio Rancho Public Schools’ district office.

Canned goods and turkeysOn November 22, RRPS maintenance staff members delivered 6,963 pounds of food to Storehouse West – turkeys, canned goods, potatoes, rice, staples such as flour and sugar, and all the fixings.  Storehouse West advises that it is the biggest single donation of food it has ever received.

The Storehouse West food drive is a tradition for RRPS district-level employees, and they make a contest of it, with teams formed from the various departments squaring off to see who can donate the most food.  There’s then an official “weigh-in” to determine the winning team.

Winning team poses on truck with trophy and foodThis year, for the third consecutive year, the el cheapo turkey trophy went to a team made up of staff members from the Chief Academic Officer’s office, the School Improvement office, Federal, Bilingual, and Native American Programs, Curriculum and Instruction, and Human Resources.  But of course the real winners are the Rio Rancho families who will have food on their tables for the holiday.

The district office’s Storehouse West drive is just one of the many ways RRPS and its schools give back to the community.  Most schools hold their own holiday food, clothing, and gift drives, benefiting organizations including St. Felix Pantry, Storehouse West, and more.  The district’s annual United Way campaign – which is just wrapping up -- is one of the largest in the metro area.

Maintenance Staff Member weighing foodThe RRPS district office staff performs those centralized functions that any organization needs to operate – hiring and personnel support, finance, purchasing, facilities maintenance, technology support, academic planning and support, and student supports including nursing, counseling, and students with special needs.  The administrative work district office staff members do helps take some of this burden off of school principals and teachers, allowing them to focus their efforts on student learning.
