RRHS Associated Students receive BIG Event award from Varsity SpiritBig hearts, big event, big award!  Rio Rancho High’s Associated Students’ annual BIG Event has helped hundreds of Rio Rancho residents over its 11 year history – and this month, reaped the rewards.  The BIG Event was named the top high school community service project in the country.

Every November, hundreds of RRPS students and dozens of adult volunteers fan out across Rio Rancho to do yard work and other odd jobs for local residents.  This last year, students and their adult supervisors helped out at 90 homes across the city.  Residents are invited to sign up and there are no age or income criteria.  However, most citizens who receive help during the BIG Event are older, disabled, or have chronic medical issues and are unable to do heavy yard maintenance or other chores around their homes.

Varsity Spirit trophy and finalist certificatesRio Rancho High's entry was chosen from among ten Community Service Project Award finalists from across the country.  These in turn were narrowed down from hundreds of nominees.   RRHS was also a national finalist in the School Traditions category.

The award is sponsored by Varsity Brands, a company specializing in spirit wear, class rings, and other items designed to build school spirit.  The Varsity Brands School Spirit Awards recognize high schools in 26 categories related to inspiring school pride, student engagement and community spirit, including academics, athletics, and fine arts.  The company’s website states that its research has found that students with higher levels of school spirit perform better academically, are more involved, and feel happier and more connected to their schools and communities – a philosophy RRPS shares.   The recognition includes a $3,000 award to the winning school.

The Community Service Projects award recognizes that a high school is the heartbeat of its community, and as such, has the tremendous power to make a positive impact. Winning projects such as the BIG Event engage high school students and staff in an effort to improve their surroundings, coming together to focus on the “big picture” for the benefit of their community.
