RRHS JROTC runners on the Bataan Memorial Death March courseEven for world-class marathoners, it's one of the toughest races in the country: 26.2 grueling, sandy, hilly, rocky, Organ Mountain terrain miles in the midst of a national military installation whose location was chosen precisely because it is so inhospitable.  It attracts 8,000 of the toughest military and civilian runners on the planet.  It's a true test of grit and endurance even for seasoned runners, let alone a bunch of high school Junior ROTC kids.

And in this tough world, Rio Rancho High rules.  Once again this year, cadets from the Marine JROTC program at Rio Rancho High dominated the JROTC division of one of the toughest marathons in the country: the Bataan Memorial Death March Marathon, held March 17 at White Sands Missile Range in southern New Mexico.  (And yes, that's snow on the course.)  Its three cadet teams finished first, second, and sixth out of the 23 registered JROTC teams from throughout the southwest.   It's the fifth consecutive year that a RRHS JROTC team has won their division.

It is attended by many of the survivors of the march, along with thousands of supporters from around the world. Held annually since 1990, it is regarded by Marathon Guide as one of the top 30 marathons in the U.S.
