When a community takes a stand, it truly can become a better place to live. That’s the message of the Rio Rancho Public Schools Anti-Bullying Committee and City of Rio Rancho Acts of Kindness Day, being held this year on Saturday, October 27, 12 PM to 3 PM at Haynes Park.

Acts of Kindness Day 2015 - Fire Dept. boothThe goal of Acts of Kindness Day is simple: to get people to think about how they treat one another and encourage a culture of civility in our community.  Applications are currently being accepted from schools and performing groups who would like to demonstrate how their efforts make our community a kinder, better place to live.

Acts of Kindness Day 2015: Lincoln MS boothThe event draws its inspiration from Rachel’s Challenge, a program which urges teens to strive for an atmosphere of kindness and compassion in schools and to reject bullying and violence. Rachel’s Challenge is named in honor of Rachel Scott, one of the students killed in the Columbine High School shootings in 1999.  In keeping with Rachel’s legacy, Acts of Kindness Day encourages students to reach out to and connect with all of their peers, especially those who might feel ignored or threatened, and to treat each other with courtesy and respect with the ultimate objective of banishing bullying.

Acts of Kindness Day 2015 - Rio Rancho ES choirActs of Kindness Day features games and activities for children of all ages, musical performances from student groups, and booths where schools, organizations, and businesses share good things they do for the community.  Participants are invited to help in creating a “chain of kindness” where participants can write down something kind they did for someone and include it as a link in the chain.  Participants can also pledge to do something kind for someone else.

Mayor Gregg Hull and Superintendent Sue Cleveland are scheduled to open the event.
