In early August, Rio Rancho Public Schools was honored to host American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten. Ms. Weingarten was joined by Rio Rancho School Employees Union (RRSEU) President Billie Helean and Rio Rancho Public Schools (RRPS) Superintendent Dr. V. Sue Cleveland to tour our alternative high school, Independence High School, learn more about our new virtual school called the SpaRRk Academy, and learn more about our Career Technical Education programs.
The trio also wanted to encourage all Rio Rancho Public School students to return to public school. Using a grant from the AFT, the RRSEU and RRPS are working together to let families know that public schools will be 100 percent open, safe and welcoming, using billboards, ads and flyers in communities. This work will continue over the next couple of weeks. The grant is part of the AFT’s $5 million Back-to-School for All tour championing a return to five-days-a-week, bricks-and-mortar instruction.
