Sandia Vista Update: 5/6/08

REGISTRATION FOR SANDIA VISTA STUDENTS (click here to view the entire district registration schedule)
We are now entering another phase in preparation for the opening of Sandia Vista Elementary in the fall of 2008.  Students who are currently enrolled at Vista Grande Elementary and Enchanted Hills Elementary, but who reside in the Sandia Vista Elementary boundaries, will receive a white envelope on the last day of school from their current teacher.  Each packet will include pre-printed registration cards (for office and nurse), information about internet safety use, FERPA laws, dress code, bus rules, and photo release.  Also in the white packet will be a school calendar for 2008-2009 and a supply list, as well as your child’s report card from their current school.  Parents are asked to review and complete the registration cards, as well as read and sign all other documents and bring them, as well as proof of residency, to registration anytime between 8:30-12:00 and 1:00-4:00 July 28th-30th.

If your child will be new to Rio Rancho Public Schools this coming school year, and you reside within the Sandia Vista Elementary School boundaries, you can also register your child between July 28th and 30th at the school site.  You will need to bring your child’s birth certificate, immunization records, and proof of residency (a utility bill, for example).

Kindergarten registration is ongoing until June 6th.  You may pick up a kindergarten registration packet at the Sandia Vista office, currently located in Portable #10 at Enchanted Hills Elementary, 5400 Obregon Rd.  To register a kindergartener, you will need a birth certificate, immunization records, and proof of residency.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Although the construction of the entire Sandia Vista school building will not be completed before school begins on August 18th, we will have a partial occupancy of the building…the 3rd-5th grade wing, the multi-purpose room, cafeteria, administration offices, and library.  Our current enrollment is less than 400 students, so all K-5th grade students will be able to begin the school year in the new wing (believe it or not, we will all fit!).  The tentative date for the completion of the Kindergarten-2nd grade wing is September 19th, and the planned date for the K-2nd grade students to be in their permanent classrooms is October 6th. 
           
Ideally, we would have the entire building ready for the students on day one of the new school year, but I can assure you that my staff and I will do everything in our power to make the students’ transition to their new school a positive experience.

At this time, you can reach me or our school secretary, Bonnie Strobel, at 892-5176.  Our temporary office is located in Portable #10 at Enchanted Hills Elementary, 5400 Obregon Rd.  We will be available at this phone number and location until June 13th.  By mid-July, we should be moved into our permanent offices at Sandia Vista Elementary (HOORAY!!), and all phone calls will be forwarded to the new number.  Any new information regarding Sandia Vista Elementary will be submitted to the local newspapers…the Albuquerque Journal (Rio Rancho Journal) and the Observer… and will also be posted to this website.

I want to welcome our new school secretary, Ms. Bonnie Strobel (pictured to the left), to Sandia Vista Elementary.  Bonnie comes to us from Enchanted Hills Elementary, where she was the registrar for ten years.  Bonnie is quite knowledgeable in the important procedures of registration, attendance, and front office management.  I know she will be a true asset to our staff and school.

S.A.F.E Before and After School Program                                               
We are happy to announce August 13, 14 and 15 as our Registration dates for Sandia Vista’s S.A.F.E Before and After School Program. Our Director, Nadine Larranaga (pictured to the right) is planning now to provide the best before/after school programs available for SVE students. Sandia Vista Elementary's First Principal
Even though the opening of the new elementary school is a year away, the new principal has been hired and is already in the process of planning and organizing for this school year and next.

Ms. Patricia A. Cruz is the new principal. A native of New Mexico, Ms. Cruz was a teacher for 23 years. Her teaching experience includes 15 years in Arizona, where she taught grades K-8, including three years in a one-room schoolhouse. After teaching in Alaska for eight years, Ms. Cruz returned to New Mexico in 2002 where she began her administrative career as the assistant principal of Dulce Elementary School. After a year as Director of Instruction in Dulce, she became the principal of Cuba Elementary and Middle Schools in 2004. Ms. Cruz was also the Director of Instruction for Cuba Schools for one year and the District Test Coordinator for two years.

Ms. Cruz became Dr. Cruz when she completed her doctoral degree in Educational Administration from New Mexico State University on October 24, 2007.
