How to get kids to pay attention!

Be SAFE this summer: bicycle helmet safety!

The Shining Stars Preschool is a special education program for children who have educational disabilities. Children in the RRPS Shining Stars Preschool have Individualized Education Plans (IEP's) with learning goals and objectives based on needs identified through formal testing. The goals and objectives are guides for the staff to help the child acquire skills that other children of their age have already learned.

Each class includes peer models that demonstrate appropriate development skills for the other children. The program serves children with a variety of disabilities.

SSPS Honors local WalMart for Contributions:

On Friday, May 30, 2008, the Rio Rancho Public Schools (RRPS) Shining Stars Preschool and the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) presented Wal-Mart Supercenter Store #3732 located at 901 Unser Blvd. Southeast in Rio Rancho with a plaque to thank Wal-Mart and their employees for all their support and their financial contributions for the 2007-2008 school year.

Wal-Mart worked with the social worker at Shining Stars Preschool and, with the help of their generous employees, donated $1000 in gift cards to the families in need for the holidays. In addition, Wal-Mart donated gift cards to the PTO to help purchase food and drinks for Balloons Aloft to ensure every child that attended was able to have a beverage. Wal-Mart helped purchase lunch for the teachers and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week. Wal-Mart also donated hundreds of Easter baskets, plastic eggs, and egg coloring kits to the families of Shining Stars Preschool. Wal-Mart, with help from Pepsico, Inc., also raised enough money to fund the mural painted in the Shining Stars Preschool Library.

Nica Trujillo, Community Involvement Coordinator at Wal-Mart, spoke of the importance of education for the children and that they were more than happy to give back to the Rio Rancho community by helping Shining Stars Preschool and their families this year. Suzanne Harper, principal of RRPS Shining Stars Preschool, spoke on behalf of Shining Stars Preschool and the PTO. Ms. Harper thanked Wal-Mart and their employees for all the wonderful help they have given to the teachers, staff, and the families of Shining Stars Preschool. She spoke specifically of how excited the families were to receive free Easter baskets and how thrilled the teachers were last year when Wal-Mart donated many Halloween costumes to the school.

Ms. Harper also briefly explained the philosophy of Shining Stars Preschool which is early intervention. She stated that 2/3 of the children attending the preschool have a developmental delay ranging from speech and language delays to autism, for example. “The preschool works with the children early so when they get to kindergarten, they do not have any developmental delays and are where they should be.” Ms. Harper once again expressed her gratitude for everything that Wal-Mart has helped the Shining Stars Preschool with this school year. With the help of two Shining Stars Preschool students, Elissa Raybourn and Joseph Trujillo, Ms. Harper proudly presented a plaque to Nica Trujillo, Chad and Suze , both assistant managers of Wal-Mart. The store manger, Andy Padilla, was unable to attend.

What is our Philosophy?

The RRPS SSP is based on the premise that early intervention is effective in remediating learning deficits and identifying strategies which offset the impact of educational disabilities on young children. Some children with disabilities need specialized intervention to maximize the skills they need for kindergarten. The SSP has a transdisciplinary philosophy in which all the staff members working with a child share techniques to address individual goals and objectives. The school team, along with the parents and other caregivers, work together in roles which address each child's specific needs.

Program Components

The Shining Stars Preschool consists of a variety of placement options for children who qualify for services:

Who will work with my child?

If you visit our classrooms, you will see several adults in the room. A certified special education teacher designs the daily program based on developmentally appropriate curriculum. Instructional assistants help the teacher implement the plans. Therapists integrate their activities into the curriculum.
