At a special board meeting on Monday, March 5, the Rio Rancho school board voted unanimously to restore Friday, April 6 as a “no school” day and to make up the February 14 snow day on May 24. This will extend the school year by one day past the previously scheduled last day of school, which was May 23. May 24 was one of the originally designated snow make-up days in the 2006-07 calendar.
The decision was based on input from staff and parents indicating absenteeism was likely to be very high on April 6. The board was particularly concerned about a large number of requests by school staff for personal time off on that date and the probability that the district could not obtain a sufficient number of substitute teachers to cover classes. High student absenteeism is also a concern because attendance rates are one of the factors that can cause schools to not make AYP (adequate yearly progress) under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
So far this school year, Rio Rancho has had to close for an unprecedented four days because of snow. Students made up two of these days earlier this month, and will make up the other two on April 27 and May 24.
