THE BIG EVENT

AS RRHS

Associated Students of Rio Rancho High School

On Saturday, November 22, 2008, Rio Rancho High School Associated Students is sponsoring its first-ever “Big Event”. The Big Event is a one-day community service project where RRHS students complete various jobs around the Rio Rancho community as a way of saying “thank you” for the community’s support of RRHS.

The Big Event is a program begun 25 years ago at Texas A&M University, where more than 10,000 students complete more than 1,100 projects in a single day. The Big Event has spread to more than 70 universities across the country, and several high schools in Texas. Rio Rancho High School now wants to be a part of this exciting project.

What kind of jobs will the students do?

These projects typically involve a team of four or five students performing “odd jobs” at the homes of community members, such as raking leaves, pulling weeds, cleaning windows, trimming trees, etc. Any tools required to complete the job will be donated. NO POWER TOOLS ARE PERMITTED.

Who will supervise the students?

Each team of students will be supervised by an adult who has had a background check completed by the Rio Rancho Public Schools. The supervisors will meet the students at the assigned staging area, accompany the students to the jobsite, and back to the staging area.

What about transportation?

Students will have to provide their own transportation to and from their assigned staging area. Transportation to job sites not within walking distance of the staging area will have transportation to and from the job site. Students must report to the staging area at 9:30 AM on Saturday, November 22, 2008. Students should be back at the staging area no later than 2:45 PM.

What should the students bring?

NO POWER TOOLS ARE PERMITTED. Students should bring work gloves, wear clothes they don’t mind getting dirty, and boots or sneakers, NO FLIP FLOPS.  Since the events runs from about 9:30 – 2:30, students should eat a good breakfast before they come.

What do the students get out of participating?

In addition to giving back to the community, each student will receive a Big Event T-shirt, and an invitation to the Post Event celebration at Rio Rancho High School from 3-5 pm.

We hope this answers some of your questions. If you have other questions, please don’t hesitate to call Mr. Duncan at 896-5637. We look forward to your student participating in this great event, and be part of starting a new Big Tradition at Rio Rancho High School.

Important Information!

Aditional Information & Forms for The Big Event

GOALS

The goal for this first Big Event is 50 projects, which means we need at least 50 adult supervisors. If you are interested in being a supervisor, fill out the ADULT SUPERVISOR FORM which explains what your responsibilities are as a supervisor.

If you know of someone in Rio Rancho who could benefit from a project at their home, please print off the RR DISTRIBUTION JRF form, which the community member can fill out and return to the school addiress.

Lastly, PLEASE share this information with your students. If you sponsor a club or coach a team, we would love to have them join us. You can give individuals or groups of students the RR STUDENT PARTICIPATION form and they can fill it out and return it.

A.S. has alredy obtained an enthusiastic endorsement from the City of Rio Rancho and from the school board. We hope this project will not only create lasting connections and goodwill between our school and community, but bring our school community together as well.

We appreciate any support you can give us. If you would like an A.S. student to come to your class and show the video and explain the project, please let me know and we will try to arrange it.

Time is running short, November 22 is only weeks away!

ONE BIG DAY, ONE BIG THANK YOU, ONE BIG EVENT!
