Brooklyn-born lifelong New York Mets fan Ron Murphy is never far from a baseball diamond.
A one-time coach of Boston Red Sox reliever Brendan Donnelly, Murphy’s first head-coaching position was at Albuquerque’s St. Pius X High School.
After taking the Sartans to the Class AAAA state championship game for the second year in a row in 1997, Murphy became the baseball coach at Rio Rancho High School in time for its first season (1998). He was 117-42 with the Sartans, and has led the Class 5A Rams to 181 victories and just 69 losses in ten seasons at RRHS (The Rams were 24-5 and District 1-5A Champs in 2007 ). In 2007 the Rams went on to win the State Championship without making a error in the three State Championship games and only allowing two runs scored ! Coach Murphy currently has 298 total wins as a head coach and is expected to reach the 300 milestone this season.
Married to Minerva, the Murphys have two volleyball-playing college daughters, Valerie and Amber, and a 5-year-old son, Tyler. Valerie Played at Marshalltown college in Iowa and now attends UNM.
