Welcome to 8B!
This year will be an exciting, quick year. All students need to be ready to enter the high school, so please be aware that demands will be placed on your student.
Our goal as Team 8B is for each student to meet or exceed spring NWEA scores, make expected growth for adequate yearly progress, and score proficient or advanced on the SBA. Your student will frequently engage in setting goals, examine learning processes, solve problems, plan accordingly as we strive to meet these goals
- Assignments are expected on time.
- Students are permitted to make up all assignments, tests, and quizzes within three days of an excused absence. It is the student’s responsibility to ask for make-up work. Failure to make up work in a timely manner may result in a zero.

General Information
Students are not allowed to use the phone at school, nor will messages be delivered to students unless there is an explained emergency. Please take care of personal business (rides home, after school activities, lunch issues, etc.) with your child prior to sending them to school each day.
Items such as cell phones, CD players and CDs, MP3 players, Ipods, video games, toys, skateboards, “wheelies,” trading cards, teck decks and other valuables should be left at home. These items are prohibited at school and will be confiscated. The teachers, school, and district are not responsible for lost or stolen items.
Parent Commitment
Teacher, student, parents, and administration must be committed to and work together toward the student’s social and academic success. Please show your commitment by:
- replenishing supplies as needed.
- spending at least 10 minutes a day actively listening to your student tell you about school.
- insisting that the television be turned off until homework assignments are completed. Please try to make an quiet area for your student to study.
- checking over your child’s homework to be certain it is done to the best of your student’s ability.
- setting high standards for academic integrity.
Grading Policy
Your child’s progress is documented through grades on assignments, tests/quizzes, and projects throughout the school year. Eagle Ridge’s common grading scale is as follows:
A 90 - 100
B 80 - 89
C 70 - 79
D 60 - 69
F 0 – 59
Proficiency is defined as 80% average.
Progress Reports Dates
This year Rio Rancho Public Schools District adopted a new grading program. It was installed when school began and since we have been working out all the kinks. Team 8B wanted to begin giving grades last week, but there were still major problems. Therefore, we are now ready to begin giving out progress reports starting on Wednesday, September 16. Deficiencies will be given out on Friday, September 11, 2009, and if your student receives a deficiency, a progress report will be attached. Please sign it and have it returned to his/her homeroom teacher. Students still have time to make up the work on the progress report, but as of now, the work will be considered to be late.
We appreciate all of our parents who check their student’s grades on their computers, and unfortunately, you will need to sign up again and get a new password. Hopefully that system will be up soon.
Progress reports will be issued on the following schedule:
Wednesday, September 16
Wednesday, September 30
Wednesday, October 14
Thursday, October 15 will be the end of the first quarter.
Students will be able to view their grades which are posted on our boards in the hallway. They are printed by ID numbers. You are welcome to view these, also.
Homework
Homework will be assigned regularly in core classes. The purpose of homework is to reinforce concepts taught in class, practice skills learned, teach personal responsibility and organization, and encourage parent involvement. All assignments will be announced, posted in the room, and copied by the student in his/her agenda.
Should a student be unclear about an assignment be sure to call a study buddy and ask for help. If they are not able to help you, call our extension before school the next day and let us know that you need help.
Communication
- Your child will receive BI-WEEKLY progress reports in EVERY CORE CLASS, beginning with the third week of every quarter. These will be collected in homeroom, stapled as a packet, and sent home with your student EVERY OTHER WEDENSDAY. Please look for progress reports and discuss them with your student.
- Sign on to our school website and visit our team page. We will endeavor to keep you updated with current areas of study, important due dates, upcoming assignments, and general announcements.
Behavior Expectations
All students at Eagle Ridge Middle School are expected to behave respectfully, responsibly, and safely. In the first weeks at school, we will make certain your child repeatedly practices all procedures at ERMS until the learning is internalized.
Learning is our business in Team 8B, and disruptions to the learning process are unacceptable. The following are behavior expectations of every student:
- Be respectful: Be aware of others’ opinions, ideas, and rights.
- Be responsible: Learning is your business. Be on task at all times. Be in your seat, with your supplies, ready to work when class begins.
- Be safe: Be courteous.
All students will become familiar with the Students’ Bill of Rights. A copy of the Bill of Rights will come home to be reviewed, signed, and returned.
Refocuses
The school is implementing an system for correcting student behavior. A student will receive 3 opportunities to change distributive behavior in each class and in common areas of the school. Any staff member can refocus a student. Parents will receive a phone call on the 3rd offense. On the 4th the student will receive an office referral. If you have any questions about this system please feel free to contact Mr. Halbig or Mrs. Cook.
