Resources for Orchestras and Exploratory Music

Students will receive the following materials:

Beginner Orchestra

Essential Elements Book I (with CD/DVD)

Binders- All students will receive a one-inch binder. This binder serves as a data folder and textbook. It contains warm-ups/scales, sheet music, returned class work, progress reports, and our handbook.

Advanced

Binders- All students will receive a one-inch binder. This binder serves as a data folder and textbook. It contains warm-ups/scales, sheet music, returned class work, progress reports, and our handbook.

*Notation/Sound files are e-mailed home occasionally to those students who have internet access.

Exploratory

Binders- All students will receive a one-inch binder. This binder serves as a data folder and textbook.

Units of Study- Each semester will be divided in two parts:

Part I- "Music From the Inside Out"

This is a workshop curriculum. Students will discover how music impacts their lives, what makes music different from noise, how musicians work together to create art, and will create their own composition by the end of the first quarter.

Short interviews with musicians from the Philidelphia Orchestra will be viewed at various points during this section. Students will journal and chart their ideas.

Part II- Observations of Musical Performances

Students will attend and/or experience through media various musical performances and will learn to compare and contrast these works (this is a continuation of what we will have learned during the previous quarter). Students will also study various classic and modern musicians and composers.
