Rio Rancho Elementary School Library Program FAQ
Students at Rio Rancho Elementary School are scheduled to visit the library on a regular basis. This allows every child the oppotunity to regularly check out books. In addition, there remain many open, available times for classroom teachers to bring their students for projects and extra activities.
Q: When does my child come to the library?
A: Children can come to check out books everyday. The library is set up so there is open check out every day. What this means is if your child finishes a book every night, they could come in everyday and get a new one. They don't have to wait two weeks to get something interesting to read. Students also come to the library for lessons or activities as their classroom teacher schedules them with the librarian, these lessons and activites can then be tied directly to what is happening in the classroom. Research shows that when children learn library skills in context they are better able to retain those skills and transfer that learning to other areas.
Q: When are my child's books due?
A: The scheduled due date is two weeks after the day a book is checked out. If the student needs the book for a longer period they just bring it back to the library on the due date and it can be renewed for two more weeks. If they finish it early, they can turn it in during open check out and get an new one.
Q: What if my child loses or damages a book?
A: We are constantly teaching students about the proper "care and feeding" of library books but if one accidently gets misplaced or damaged, we are required by State and District policy to collect a replacement fee. This cost depends on the cost to replace that particular book. Students are provided with "book notices" through out the year identifying when books have not been returned and the cost to replace them.
Q: What if I pay for a book and find it later?
A: The library keeps a copy of book reciepts for up to a year. If you find a book within that time frame and return it, we will be happy to refund the replacement fee. Be sure to keep a copy of your reciept as well.
