Language Arts:

In Language Arts this week we be reading the story, Water Mellon Day, by Kathi Appelt in our text book.  We will be reading the story throughout the week this week and next different ways to prepare us for our comprehension test next Friday.

Also, This week we will continue practicing our sentence/paragraph structure.  We are also working on using story maps to help us write detailed stories that have a plot.   In addition, we will be talking about pre-writing and drafting during writing workshop.  Lastly, we will continue to learn new words from our word wall.

We will also continue reading groups (literature circles).  Students will read with other students at or around their reading level and do several activities to check for

comprehension.

Social studies:  This month we will be learning about our national community.  We we learn about the origins and

symbolic meaning of our US flag, and about national icons like the white house, bald eagle, and Statue of Liberty.

Keep an eye out for our National Symbols Brochure to be coming home soon!

Show and tell:

I will allow students at any time to bring a show and tell.  But they know that this is only something we do if we have extra time during our school day.  Also, I ask the children to keep their "show and tells" in their backpack until showing time.  If it is out and they are playing with it, I take it away until the end of the day.

:

I will assign homework Monday-Friday.  Every night except for Friday, I will ask that students read and study spelling words on top of their nightly homework.

The additional homework that I send home will be a review for students to practice and keep what we're learning within class "fresh" in their mind.

We will only have 10 spelling words per week.  Sometimes we will have spelling words covered in previous weeks as a review/and/or if we are still having trouble spelling the words.

This week's spelling words are:

1. knock

2. know

3. knight

4. wrong

5. write

6. sign

7. gnat

8. wrist

9. unknown

10. writer
