ACADEMICS & HOMEWORK
Students will have weekly spelling tests, weekly grammar quizzes, and reading/vocabulary tests. I would like the students to learn this year that time spent in preparation for an upcoming test does pay off!
Every assigmnet has a purpose and importance. The work is explained and discussed as we go over it together.
A data binder will be sent home twice a month with important progress information, please go over it with your child and discuss thier progress.
The students should have 20-30 minutes of homework nightly, except for Firdays. Please check for a Math Home Link, spelling words and of course nightly reading.
Starting this quarter, I will be requiring each student to turn in a reading log on the first day of the week, The grade will be determined by the number of minutes read. Each student is supposed to be reading for at least 20 minutes a night, seven nights a week, so for example, if the student read for 140 minutes or more, they would get an 100 for the week.
Also starting this quarter, each student must take and pass one AR test (
Accelerated
Reading) each week. These are comprehension tests taken on the computer to test their understanding of the book they just read.
SCIENCE:
Scientific Thinking
Students are constantly challenged to design tests, perform trials, and evaluate results in this physical science unit. They explore magnets to discover where the indirect magnetic force is the greatest and then find out what "iron fortified" really means. Pendulums help students see the relationships between their data and a physical graph. Then they learn how to use properties of the materials in mixtures to separate them and get an introduction to the science of light.
LANGUAGE ARTS
In Language Arts, we will begin our next piece of writing, EXPLANATORY, students will write an explanation. Together, they will explore the features of this mode as they choose a topic based on mutual knowledge or experience, come up with information and details that explain, and put their ideas in step-by-step order.

Computer Time
At Cielo Azul we believe that a good school curriculum should include teaching students to become proficient with computers. We are very fortunate to have a great technology lab, with enough computers for every child to experiment and learn. Our call will be visiting the computer lab each Friday and will will be practicing keyboarding skills, playing educational games to reinforce academic concepts, and becoming familaiar with other useful computer programs, such as Power Point. We are also excited to use the new mobile lap top computers available to us and will be bringing them into the classroom to futher our technology skills.
