Look at what we are learning!
Math:
We are learning and understanding how to “regroup” add 2- 2 digit numbers. They are doing very well with the algorithm, and the understanding of the concept. This week we will begin learning how to “borrow” when subtracting. We will start with using base ten blocks. Once they understand this concept they will move into doing the traditional algorithm.
Literacy:
Students have learned characteristics of non-fiction text and how it is different from fiction text. In our literacy groups, we will continue reading non- fiction text, which will further help in their understanding. We are also working on the reading skill of Cause and Effect. Discuss with your child real life cause and effects to help them to further understand.
Writing:
I am so proud of all my students in their writings that they are creating! We continue to construct paragraphs when given a topic whether it is fiction or non fiction. They recently studied and learned about Martin Luther King Jr. and his contributions to our country. The students then wrote a biography about him. Their writings are displayed on our bulletin board outside our classroom. We recently learned about similes and how they are used by authors to make their writing powerful. We practiced writing similes and created a class book of similes. We will now start to use similes in our writings.
Social Studies/Science:
In Science we will be covering our Healthy Unit and Biodiversity Unit. We have learned that germs make us sick. Germs are bacteria or virus. We learned how to keep germs out and discussed ways to keep healthy. We all became a part of the “Clean Hands Club.” Ask your child about the experiment we did on washing hands and their findings. We will continue to learn about our body. We learned about the importance of our digestive system and the parts that make up this system. We learned the importance of eating healthy and having a high fiber diet. We will also be learning about the respiratory system, circulatory system, and the skeletal system. After our Healthy Unit we will start our Biodiversity Unit.
February is Black History Month and Presidents Day! We will be learning about famous black African Americans and their contributions to America. We will also be learning about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
