Look at what we are learning:
In language arts this week, we are working on writing paragraphs. We want all of our paragraphs to have a topic sentence, three detailed sentences and a conclusion sentence. We are reading the story The Enormous Turnip and are working to identify the elements of a story (title, author, beginning, middle, end, genre.) We are also beginning to make inferences on the stories we read. Our spelling words this week are working on the /ing/ phonogram.
In math this week we will start Unit 3 which focuses on place value, money and time. We will focus on the value of each number in any given 2 or 3 digit number. We will be reviewing coin values and be working on different coin combinations. Additionally, we will be putting our knowledge to real-world uses by practicing buying fruit and vegetables from a Fruit Stand. Our knowldge of telling time will continue to grow by practicing telling time to the 1/2 hour and 5 minutes. Our morning 4-square problems will focus on word problems that encompass all of the Unit 3 skills we are working on.
In science we started our Soils and Rocks Unit. In this unit, we will be examining the properties of different types of soils and how soils and rocks are related. We will also be examining how the different soils support plant life.
In social studies we have been learning about the 7 continents and 4 oceans. We have been using maps and globes to locate them as well. We will continue to study their location on the globe and the different biosystems that we have here on earth.

**While this schedule may be difficult to interpret, it is here to give you a general idea of where we are on any given day. Every Tuesday please make sure your child is in sneakers for P.E.**
Homework:
Per Rio Rancho Public Schools District Policy, 2nd graders will ONLY have 20 minutes of assigned homework each night. In my classroom, I will assign a math Homelinks sheet each night (with the exception of the days where there is not a math lesson because we took a test that day). After students have completed their Homelinks page, the remainder of the 20 minutes will be spent reading. Please remind students to record their nightly reading in their agenda and initial next to their reading. We do have 15 spelling words in 2nd grade and we practice them for 30 minutes each day and test on Friday. Please visit the links below if you would like to have the students practice their spelling at home; but please remember there is not assigned spelling homework!!
