Look at what we are learning:
In language arts this year, we will be working towards reading grade level texts with comprehension. We will achieve this by identifying plot, setting, and characters using details and stating events in
sequence. We will decode unknown words using basic elements of phonetic analysis (e.g. syllables, suffixes,
prefixes, and root words). We will also apply knowledge of all sources of information (e.g. meaning, structure, visual) to read new
texts independently. We will read aloud with fluency at grade level. In spelling we will spell correctly at grade level using previously studied words and spelling patterns, use phonetic spelling of challenging words. In writing we will use correct capitalization and punctuation in a simple narrative paragraph, edit for complete sentences, correct word order, and punctuation. Finally we will complete first drafts using the writing process. These skills will be introduced and perfected throughout the school year.
In math we will
apply strategies for computation utilizing an understanding of place value. We will also
relate everyday story problems to number sentences involving addition and subtraction.
n science we will start our Change unit. In this unit we will be studying the night sky and the phases of the moon as to how it changes. We will also be studying how seasons change. At the end of the unit, we will be learning how magnets work and how they can change objects around us.
In social studies throughout August we will discuss why rules are important by writing our class rules and mission statement. We will also identify cardinal directions and the location of important places on a map. We will end the month by constructing and labeling a map of the school.
