Welcome to what I’m sure is going to be a great school year! I enjoyed getting to meet so many of you during assessments last week! Our class is full of so many wonderful students. I know we will all learn a lot from each other.

Here are some of the things we are studying in the 1st quarter:

Math: We are starting the year with a review of place value and number sense. We will then work on a systematic approach to problem solving. Other skills we will work on throughout the year include: telling time, counting money, addition and subtraction, and geometry.

Language Arts: We are starting a new phonics curriculum this year. We will spend a great deal of time working with words and how they are formed. This will help us all with our spelling and reading skills. There will usually be 5-8 spelling words per week and they will come from our Working with Words lessons in class.

We are reading a variety of stories to help us gain an understanding of fiction and nonfiction. We will also learn to identify different story elements including characters, setting and plot.

Science: We are studying change this quarter. We are exploring different things that change including the moon, the seasons and mixtures.

Social Studies: During this quarter we will be studying groups, their leaders and their rules. We will also work on basic map skills.

During the year we will also participate in a Postcard Exchange with classes from across the United States so that we can learn about other states. This should begin in October.

Bilingual Enrichment: We are very lucky to have Bilingual Enrichment in our classroom. Sra. Padilla will come to our class 4 times a week to teach a lesson on Spanish language and Culture. We will start the year learning some basic conversational Spanish and vocabulary for things, places and people around our school.

Volunteers:

A new district policy is in place that requires all volunteers (even if you have volunteered in the past) to complete an application, have it signed by school administration and then take it to the District Office to complete the volunteer badge process. If you need a copy of the application you can get it from our office or just leave me a note in your child's agenda and I will send one home!

Any help you can provide, whether it is a one-time visit or an ongoing routine, is sincerely appreciated. It is also a great opportunity to see your child shine at school!

Homework:

In Second Grade we will usually have 20 minutes of homework nightly, Monday thru Thursday. This will include 15 minutes of reading every night. Most other nights there will be a short Math worksheet as well to support our Math lesson from that day.

Because of the amount of time we spend working with our weekly spelling words in class, Spelling homework will not be assigned. The words are in your child's agenda for review.
