The second half of Second Grade is off to a great start in Room 127! We are very busy and working hard to make sure that everyone is ready for third grade. It is amazing to think how quickly that will be here!
Here is a brief overview of some of the things we will be learning during the third quarter:
Math: We are continuing to study numbers, number patterns, time, money, basic addition and subtraction, and place value. have started to do addition with regrouping and soon will be doing subtraction with regrouping. We will also study measurement this quarter and we will start the begining concepts of multiplication and division.
Language Arts: We are continuing to identify the different elements of a story: genre, setting, characters, problem, solution, beginning, middle and end. We are also working on practicing strategies that good readers use such as: phonics/decoding skills, creating mental images, making/confirming predictions and summarizing. We are working on these concepts in our basal reader and in our Literature Circle Groups.
We are also working on writing good paragraphs.
We are working to make sure that our paragraphs have good topic sentences, at least 3 supporting detail sentences, and strong concluding sentences.
Science: We are studying biodiveristy this quarter. We are exploring the differences in living things and learning to make and write strong observations of these differences. This is one of the most exciting science units of the year! We will be watching the life cycle of beatles from the time they are mealworms! We are also growing mushrooms in the classroom!
Social Studies: During this quarter we will be studying goods and services and wages. We are also learning about important people in American history including Dr. Marting Luter King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.
Bilingual Enrichment: We are continuing to learn a lot of Spanish! We are now learning about the different sounds that letters make in Spanish and we are learning to spell and write in Spanish!
