Reading
Starting tonight reading bags will be coming home Monday – Thursday. Please read to or with your child at least 15 minutes every night. Students who read 200 minutes or more in a month will get a Star Reader Award!
We are going to be working very hard on sounding out words that we don’t know and blending them back together. Please look in your child’s planner for words that you can practice reading at home with them.
Writing
We are going to be working very hard on using our very best handwriting all of the time and learning the correct way to form and write all of our letters. Please encourage your child to use their very best handwriting at home as well.
Students will begin writing by making webs to help them organize their thoughts and ideas. We are also going to be working on remembering capitals and punctuation as well as sounding out words more accurately.
Math
We are going to be reviewing and learning how to add and subtract numbers using touch math. A copy of touch math will be sent home with your student with an explanation of how to use it. This is a great tool for helping them be successful in math. Please also practice skip counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.
Science and Social Studie
Our first Science unit will be on change. We study the life cycle and the cycles of the moon. In September we also do a unit on apple and make apple sauce.
Our August Social Studies focuses on maps, the compass rose and rules. In September we study autobiographies and timelines.
