Welcome back to Third Grade in Mr. Von Osten's classroom. I hope everyone had a wonderful Summer Break! Fall always seems to be a very busy time of the year.
Here's what we are doing in Mr. Von Osten's class:
Reading Treasures
Unit 1 The Big Question
In this unit, students will listen, read, and write about why learning is important. As they progress through the unit, they will also develop and apply key comprehension skills that good readers use as they read. The titles of the stories we will read are: First Day Jitters, Amazing Grace, Earth Smart, Wolf!, and My Very Own Room.
Mathematics Everyday Math
Unit 1 Routines, Review, and Assessments
The organization of Everyday Mathematics is based on the observation that children learn best when they build on prior knowledge. Unit one suggests a number of review activities for mathematics that children have encountered in earlier grades. These will provide a snapsot of their mathematical background & capabilities as they begin the new school year. In addition, Unit 1 also establishes routines meant to be used all year to promote an active cooperative learning environment. Unit 1 has four main areas of focus:
- To explore patterns on number grids,
- To review telling time, measuring lengths, & using calculators,
- To review data concepts and make predictions based on data, and
- To give equivalent names for numbers.
Sitton Spelling
We will be using the Sitton Spelling and Word Skills program this year for spelling. The program will focus on high- frequency words used in writing and skills that will enhance spelling. Spelling Units are usually about two weeks long, and "trouble words" are repeated throughout the year.
Science
We will be using C.H.O.L. (Center for Hands On Learning) kits for driving our Science Curriculum in 3rd Grade this year. Our first kit is Space/Our Planet. This Unit starts with a look at space as students learn about the night sky. Then time is spent learning about each of the planets and comparing them to each other. The focus comes back to Earth as students learn about our air & water, animals around today & those long extinct, and how our planet keeps changing.
