PICTURE DAY is TOMOROW Thursday, Sept. 2 at 10:00!!!

We have just completed our second week of first grade for your children.  We are working very hard on learning how to behave in a more academic setting.  Key to this is listening during teaching time and working quietly and independently. It will take us many weeks for some children and many others have already moved along in this skill. Your child may have come home with a note or told you they have moved their clip. This reflects on their working on listening for directions as well as listening during teaching time.

The children have enjoyed the first 2 Bio-bag get to know their classmates and stories we have written. It is a beginning step in learning to put our words on paper in a story format. Once again keep looking for the bag. A reminder: The students will be bringing home a biography bag to collect 5 things about themselves and their family.  We will use these items to get to know each other better and start our beginning writing process work. It will take several weeks for us to have all students share their bio-bag.

Your child brought home thier first Book Report for the year today. Yes, you may help them find the title and author but please let them copy the words onto the paper.  Also, listen to them tell you their favorite part of the story and then help them write a simple sentence or 2 to tell us about it. Once again let them copy a sentence you may have written with them on another piece of paper.   Thank you for your support.

I will also be sending home a Scholastic Book Order catalog the first week in September.  I find the students enjoy starting their own personal library if it is possible.

THANK YOU for arranging your schedules to make the pre-year assessment appointments.

OTHER Reminders:

1. If there is a change in your child’s regular going home schedule, SEND ME A NOTE to let me know.  I can not let a child not ride the bus on their verbal, “My mom said I ……”. We are responsible for your child’s safety and take it seriously. A late change can be made through the school office.

2. Please put your child’s lunch money in an envelope or baggie with their name on it. It prevents confusion and helps our morning prep go smoothly.

3. Please check the blue folder daily. I do. That is where I expect to receive notes and money from home.

NO SPELLING

Writing: We are beginning our writing with the biography bags and daily language practice.

Daily reading logs: coming home soon!

Language Games: Playing rhyming games or reading nursery rhymes helps keep their language (ear)skills strong. Make up silly rhymes or tongue twisters for fun. Rememebr the game Hang Man or I Spy? They are both excellant games for language as well as family fun.

Math work:

TIME and MONEY are the hardest concepts for your child to learn. To help your child with money and time, give them time limits and allow them to use money to pay for special items. For example:Talk about time left to play, before clean-up and being ready to go. When shopping point out prices on tags and ask how much money they need to pay for that item. Do they have enough? Need more?

Thank you for working with your children and supporting their learning.
