What's Happening in September:
This month we will continue our study of Nursery Rhymes to support our reading and writing. We will discuss how authors write to share their ideas. As readers we will read many books to comprehend what is at "the heart of the story" or the main idea. As writers we will write to share our ideas and use W Questions to help us develop those ideas. We will learn to read and write words with the short a and e sounds. We will also learn about the digraph ck. We will also begin to learn about the Literacy Corners in our classroom and how to use those areas appropriately and independently to support our literacy development. At the end of the month, we will have an in-depth study of the story of Johnny Appleseed. More information will come soon!
In September students will be introduced to several everyday uses of numbers- in particular, telling time and counting money. The children will also take part in many activities designed to prepare them for addition and subtraction, both as a computational skills and as tools for problem solving. Our focus will be:
- To explore various uses of numbers.
- To introduce the analog clock.
- To practice finding the values of various combinations of pennies and nickels, and
- To introduce number models for change-to-more and change-to-less situations.
Additionally, we will continue to explore All About Me. We will learn about our bodies and how to keep them healthy. We will then begin to look at Our Community. We will discuss the rules that help to keep us safe, as well as examples of what makes us good citizens. We will also learn about concepts such as needs and wants, and goods and services. We will begin a study the Sky. We will learn about different kinds of weather, and the tools to help us measure temperature, rain and wind speed. We will discuss the sun and moon and how they look in the sky over time.
We are falling into first grade with lots of learning and fun! Mrs. Griffith's First Graders are the Pick of the Crop!
