Cyber Academy and Animas iSafe Mentors Visit the Legislature! On Friday March 9th, three of our Cyber Academy students (Jeremiah, Tasha and Shelby) teamed up with 3 students from Animas School District (Jessica, Aleisha and Crystal) to present the message of internet safety to our state legislators! All the students manned a table in the capital rotunda sharing information about the iSafe program and the need to protect children on the internet. The students from Animas presented a video documentary of a mock abduction at their school and filmed the response from the students, staff and community. Their documentary clearly showed how easy it is for a student to be abducted in broad daylight and all the things that students, staff and community members should do to stay vigilant and aware to prevent this sort of thing from happening. They did a wonderful job on the documentary and in presenting it to the audience in the rotunda. A highlight of the day was when some of the students got to see an internet safety bill being passed in the Senate, right in front of them! Lt. Governor Diane Denish swung the gavel to pass an internet safety bill, prompting the students to ask if it really did happen! Jeremiah even had a chance to chat briefly with the Lt. Gov. later that day to express his gratitude for her support with such programs. The students also got to eat lunch with Dr. James Holloway and Stephanie Belmore, both with the Public Education Department. Below is a short slide-show of the many activities of that day. Our sincere thanks go out to the amazing Animas and Cyber students, Monica Romero, Camille Fanelli, Elaine K. Manicke-RRCA Principal, Peter Barron, Brenda Richardson, Technology Specialist from Animas, Stephanie Belmore, Education Technology Bureau Chief-PED and her Exec. Assistant Mia Romero for everything they did to help make this event a reality for our students!
