A History of Our School Colors:

Why Copper and Platinum?

Copper and platinum were chosen as the representative colors for the Rio Rancho Cyber Academy not only because they are a departure from the norm, but also because they represent both the past and the future. Research on the two metals revealed a history and symbolism appropriate to our purpose: a blending of old and new, reflected by copper’s malleability conducive to change and by platinum’s strength and permanence for the future.

Copper is humanity’s first metal, dating from Sumerian and Egyptian metallurgy circa 3900 BC. Its physical properties of conductivity, strength, ductility, malleability and resistance to corrosion and wear make it a versatile and highly useful metal. Copper has been used in common household items like pots, and in highly decorative applications including royal crowns and inlays on palaces and temples. It is also believed to have the power to heal the mind and body based on its conducting properties related to the transfer of energy.

Platinum is the newest of the noble metals, so called because they are resistant to corrosion or oxidation. It was discovered in South America following the arrival of the Spanish, and first referenced in 1557 in a publication by Italian scholar Julius Scalinger as a difficult-to-melt metal. It has often been used to enhance the beauty of diamonds and other gemstones. Prior to World War II, platinum was declared a strategic material and its use in most non-military applications was prohibited. The metal was eventually released from this embargo and today is employed in diverse industrial and scientific applications, as well as jewelry. It is a symbol of enduring value and strength.

The Rio Rancho Cyber Academy is also a blending of old and new: traditional classroom teaching methods enhanced by the latest technological advances, allowing students to benefit from both group and one-on-one approaches. Students may employ “distance learning” via in-home computer connections to classes, or enroll for more traditional classes on campus.
