How to stimulate speaking
and listening skills

1. Hold at least one full conversation with your child each day on a topic of his or her choice.

6. Model clear speech. Show you child what clear articulation sounds like, and expect it from them!

2. Demonstrate good listening skills by listening to your child actively: look at her, ask questions, etc.

7. Play rhyming games or word-category games in the car on long trips. Hide the Gameboy!
3. Ask your child questions, about everything! Don’t assume they are aware of what you know. 8. Ask for your child’s advice; help them verbalize solutions to everyday problems.
4. Think out loud; show your child how you think through a problem to solve it. They’re listening! 9. Encourage your child to use a variety of words. Don’t let them get by with "thing" and "stuff".
5. Ask your child "Why?". Give them a chance to show you their thinking skills. 10. Listen, listen, listen. It’s hard to practice language when no one’s listening.
