RRHS Marching Band captured the Grand Championship at
the Zia Marching Band competition this last weekend. For
those not familiar with the event, this is essentially
the New Mexico state championship, as well as a prestigious
regional event for marching bands. There were 32 bands
in competition in four size divisions.
RRHS placed first in its division in the preliminaries
and won two of the three “caption” awards (those for visual
effect and overall effect) plus being named Grand Champion.
The program was called “Music of Cirque du Soleil” and
included “La Nouba”, “Let Me Fall”, and “Quidam.” Drum
majors are Jonathan Fry, Matt Kretz, and Brittney Apodaca.
Kurt’s assistants are Neil Bell and Brad Dubbs; the color
guard is directed by Kim Dubbs.
The finals featured 10 very good – REALLY good – bands:
five from New Mexico (RRHS, Clovis, Las Cruces HS, Las
Cruces Mayfield, and Las Cruces Oñate), plus two bands
from Colorado Springs, one from Henderson, NV (Las Vegas,
essentially), one from El Paso, and one from Plainview,
TX. This win is a major milestone for our band program.

The Marching Band returned home to the
high school to find numerous emergency vehicles,
parents and supporters all flashing their lights and sounding
their horns!
It was truly clear that our marching band owned the field
that night as they demonstrated strong delivery of complex
and fun music with marching that was tightly integrated
with a dazzling Color Guard routine modeled after a Cirque
du Soleil performance.
We are so proud of every student, the
band directors, the RRHS Band Boosters, and all the parents
that helped make this season's performances so successful!

Mayfield High School and Clovis High School took 3rd
and 2nd place respectively, turning in really enjoyable
performances of their own. Here's a look at how RRHS has
