Gray
skies and steady rain Saturday didn’t dampen the
spirits -- or the marching prowess -- of the 230 -member
Rio Rancho High School Marching Band. Their nine-minute
performance at the Zia Marching Band Fiesta sent the band
marching home with its second state championship trophy
in as many years.
The RRHS Marching Band was the top-ranked band in Class
AAAA, beating out Mayfield HS (Las Cruces) and Clovis
HS. The band also won awards for outstanding musical achievement
for its performance of a suite of Oriental music, and
for outstanding general effect.
The highest-ranked New Mexico band in the annual Zia
competition wins the state championship. RRHS finished
third overall, behind Rampart HS of Colorado Springs,
CO and Pomona HS of Arvada, CO.
Because
of the inclement weather, the finals were cancelled and
bands were ranked based on their scores in the preliminary
competition. The competition featured 29 bands from Colorado,
Texas, and New Mexico. The top ten included:
10. La Cueva HS
9. Sandia HS
8. Oñate HS (Las Cruces)
7. Highland HS
6. Eldorado HS
5. Clovis HS
4. Mayfield HS
3. Rio Rancho HS
2. Pomona HS (Arvada, CO)
1. Rampart HS (Colorado Springs, CO)
