RRPS Reading Recovery:

Nothing is more important when children enter first grade than learning to read!  A carefully constructed comprehensive literacy plan for a district sets forth the components of strong preschool, kindergarten, and first-grade learning.  Good classroom instruction is one of the first steps in helping children become readers and writers.  Yet for some children good classroom instruction is not enough.  Reading Recovery serves as a second level of support for classroom instruction in first grade by providing more comprehensive assessments, individualized instruction, and immediate intervention.

girl readingReading Recovery is an individual first-grade early literacy intervention that supplements good classroom instruction.  It is short-term and supports classroom instruction for the lowest-achieving children in first grade.  Children meet individually with a specially trained teacher for 30-minute daily lessons lasting 12 to 20 weeks.  The purpose of these intensive tutoring lessons is to support rapid acceleration of each child’s literacy learning.

readingThe goal for Reading Recovery children is to develop effective reading and writing strategies so they can make faster than average progress, catch up with their peers, and work independently in their regular classroom.  Reading Recovery supports good classroom instruction (Site Coordinator’s Guide to the Effective Implementation of Reading Recovery, 2006).

Reading Recovery is implemented at all elementary campuses in Rio Rancho Public Schools.  For more information on Reading Recovery in RRPS, please contact Jolene Reed at jreed@rrdo.rrps.k12.nm.us
