Comprehensive Literacy Model
"The goal of the curriculum is to ensure that all children, regardless of where they are on the path of literacy, are provided with appropriate opportunities for reaching their highest potential.” L. Dorn and C. Soffos, Shaping Literate Minds 2001 Stenhouse Publisher
The Comprehensive Literacy Model (CLM) provides high quality literacy instruction for students as well as intensive professional development for teachers. Working together in Professional Learning Communities teachers learn how to design and implement instruction that is research based. Teachers learn how to differentiate instruction for students so that each child can achieve to their full potential.
Struggling literacy learners in first grade receive support from Reading Recovery teachers, while students in other grade levels receive support through small group literacy instruction.
Components of instruction within a CLM classroom include:
- Small group guided reading
- Corners or option board
- Shared reading
- Independent reading
- Read alouds/author and genre studies
- Writer’s workshop
- Math workshop
- Content area (Science and Social Studies) workshop
